Driving Tips for Spring Showers | Christian Brothers Automotive, West Wichita
We are thrilled that the first day of spring has arrived and that we have longer days and warmer weather to look forward to—but we know that April’s infamous showers are also on their way to us! While the rain is great for our gardens and the flowers to bloom in May, if you have to drive a lot, rain can be a simple nuisance or downright dangerous.
Preparing your driving skills and your car for rainy weather is a wise thing to do at this time of year so you can be certain that you are ready to tackle any rainy weather that comes our way! While not driving is always the safest solution, if you do find yourself caught in the rain, make sure you are not also caught off-guard.
Tips for Driving in Spring Weather
Get your car prepared for the rain. Transitioning your car from winter mode to spring mode is very important for its performance and your safety. Getting your car’s tires and brakes checked, changing your windshield wipers and topping off your windshield cleaning fluid are all important components of keeping your car operating well on the road in spring weather.
Remember to take it slow. The best thing you can do if you have to drive in the rain is to take things as slowly as you can while still keeping up with traffic. As weather mixes with oil on the roads, traction can be reduced, leading to less accurate turns and a longer stopping time. By driving slower, you will have more time to account for any issues that arise while you are driving.
Understand hydroplane procedures. If you see standing water on the road and are able to go around it, that is always advised. However, if you must drive through it, be aware of how to handle hydroplaning just in case. When you hydroplane, the car’s tires lose traction and begin to skid across the surface of the road, leaving the driver unable to control the car. If this happens, slowly ease off the accelerator and gradually steer where your car needs to go—never slam on the breaks or suddenly turn.
